Abstract: In order to minimize a given functional, where the constraints are given in the form of the wave equation, it is important to provide fast algorithms for solving the wave equation. We try a new approach, which uses the representation of the solution with sine and cosine operators, analogously to the "Variation of constants" approach in the theory of ODEs. The time stepping is realized with help of the Gautschi time stepping scheme, while discretization in space is done with Spectral, or Spectral Element methods, and the evaluation of the sine and cosine functions is realized via Krylov subspace methods.
